After finishing the “love chapter” Paul continues his teaching by noting the need to teach, or prophesy. “But he who prophecies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.” Paul reminds the Corinthians that it’s “not all about you.” Which is better for the work of the church – somebody strengthening themselves or somone strengthening each and every member of the church? One of the tragicomic facets of the Christian life is when people argue over spiritual gifts – especially in regard to whose gift is greater. The Corinthian Church, which can be highlighted as an example of how NOT to be a church, had those kinds of discussions and those with the miraculous gifts tended to look down on those with mundane gifts.
