September 4 – Teachings, Miracles, Resurrection, Relationship

John 10:22-42; 2 Chronicles 9; Psalm 74

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.” (John 10:27-30 NKJV)

As Jesus continued the parable about being the Good Shepherd, He responded to people who complained that Jesus wasn’t telling them plainly that He was the Christ. If they had known who He was, they’d be following Him. People who know Jesus know His voice and follow Him. They’re rewarded with eternal life and protection from evil. Then Jesus threw in the kicker to those who wanted Him to speak clearly: “I and my Father are one.” He was so plain that some of them were ready to stone Him for blasphemy. Jesus turned the conversation around to talk about His works – His miracles. They were still ready to arrest Him for His so-called blasphemy. To paraphrase a more contemporary saying though, it ain’t blasphemy if it’s fact.

It is fact that Jesus is God the Son…that He and HIs Father are one. His teachings exemplify that; his works, miracles really, prove that, and if you still don’t believe, His resurrection seals it. If you study His teachings and His miracles and if you understand the truth of His resurrection there is only one conclusion to reach: Jesus is God the Son. He proclaimed it and the Jewish leaders understood what Jesus said so they condemned Him to death. Some today would talk about the wonderful teachings of Jesus but deny the miracles and His claims of divinity and the claims of resurrection. His teachings are tied into His miracles which are tied into His divine relationship with the Father. And He, who is one with the Father, loves you and wants you to hear His voice and follow Him. Think about how much He loves you to want you to follow Him.

Lord, I’m amazed at the depth of Your love for me. You love me not for what I’ve done, but because of who You are. May I accept Your love and share it with others.
