February 19 – There Is an Evil One to Overcome

Leviticus 25 Mark 1:23-45

“Just then, a man was there in the synagogue who had an evil spirit in him. He shouted, ‘Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want with us? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are—God’s Holy One!’” (Mark 1:23-24 NCV)

Jesus began as a little known, small town teacher from Nazareth. Sure, He’d picked up a few disciples, usually guys that hadn’t made it with the real teachers, but most had low expectations of this guy, knowing that nothing good could come from Nazareth. But then, people realized that He taught with amazing authority. Then, incidents happened where people possessed by evil spirits cried out against Jesus because He was the Holy One of God, the Messiah. They may have wondered, at first, how the evil spirits recognized Him, and why they were afraid of Him. Then, His teaching confirmed the accusations of the demons because He taught with authority.

We’ve “grown” past the time of believing in demons and evil spirits in our world today. As our understanding of them has faded, so has our understanding of all things spiritual. We have a mechanistic view of the world that sees mankind as the beginning and end of all that’s good, completely discounting the spiritual. That which is bad can be controlled by human made laws. Only, laws have failed. Only, we live in a world that must confront the fact that evil exists and is seen in the hearts of those who commit evil deeds. As followers of Christ, we are to confront the evil around us with the love of Jesus Christ. Our love should be so overflowing that anyone affected by evil should recognize God’s presence in our lives.

Lord, deliver us from evil. Evil lurks in our hearts. It wreaks havoc in our world today. Overcome the evil in this world by the power of Your love.
