May 14 – Ready?

Psalm 104:24-34 35b; 2 Kings 2:1-15a; Luke 1:5-17

The years before the Revolutionary War saw a movement known as the First Great Awakening. It was a time of revival in many American churches, and this spirit of revival rebelled against authoritarianism. It was this change in attitude that made the Revolutionary War possible. In the years before the Civil War there was a similar movement known as the Second Great Awakening. This movement focused on social justice and people began emphasizing the need to end the evil known as slavery. God moves in His people before great social change.

In the years before Jesus appeared on the scene, God prepared His people for the change in a different way. He sent one man. His father, Zechariah, got an unexpected visit from an angel who described what his son would do. “And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:17)

As we look at our world today, it’s possible to take a guess at what a true outpouring of God’s Spirit would look like from this verse. We often talk about doing things for the children. Many parents spend a lot of time with their children. At the same time, there are many who see children as an inconvenience or even a punishment. When revival comes, I think it’s safe to say that the hearts of parents will turn towards their children. They will be seen as precious gifts from God. It will be worth the parents’ time to raise them right instead of finding ways to leave that privilege to others. I also believe that we will see those who are lawless change their ways as they realize that their lawbreaking is not helping them and they will seek true wisdom as they seek to change their ways.

Perhaps my belief about America being ready for another Great Awakening is nothing but a pipe dream. Many who read this might ask me why I think anything is wrong. It is time, though, for us to be a people prepared for the Lord. It is time for us to seek God’s wisdom in all areas of life. It is time to turn from our rebelliousness against God and seek His guidance for living. One day, every knee shall bow before God. It would be far better for those knees to be bent in worship, than in trembling and fear. Are you ready?

Lord God, I tremble at the thought of my own sin before You. Like Isaiah, I am a man of unclean lips among a people of unclean lips. Cleanse me Lord, and I shall be clean. Turn my heart to be ready and prepared for You however I need to be ready.
