April 20 – Forgiveness

Psalm 100; Jeremiah 50:17-20; John 10:31-42

If you talk to Republicans, the Democrats are crooked and should be investigated. If you talk to Democrats, Republicans are crooked and should be investigated. If you talk to third party or independent folks, both parties are crooked and should be investigated. And we have investigations all over the place. Some are initiated by one political group against another. Some are initiated by outside organizations, news groups especially. We all await the findings because we know that “our people” will be vindicated and “their people” will be caught.

God spoke on the subject of investigations during the exile. Those who took Judah and Israel into exile would be in trouble. But in regards to God’s people, the investigation would reveal nothing. “‘In those days, at that time,’ declares the Lord, ‘search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will forgive the remnant I spare.’” (Jeremiah 50:20)

Forgiveness overcomes all kinds of guilt. It allows us to forget the wrong done and bring reconciliation. I first heard this quote attributed to Jane Addams of Hull House, but have since found other people who have used it or may have originated it. Someone tried to bring up how another person had mistreated Ms. Addams in the past, something she had forgiven, and her response was, “I distinctly remember forgetting that.” That’s the forgiveness we see from God who does throw our sins away as far as the East is from the West.

God still forgives people. He made that forgiveness available through Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for any and all sins at the cross. The forgiveness of God is so strong that all people can receive that forgiveness by turning to Christ. That forgiveness is so strong that if we truly embrace it, our lives will change so much that each day we will have less to be forgiven. God will search for the guilt of those who follow Christ and none will be found for we are living in the grace and forgiveness He offers.

Lord God, I don’t deserve Your forgiveness, but You offer it to me freely in Jesus Christ. That’s what makes it grace. I pray for those reading this who have never experienced that grace. May today be the day that they turn to You and accept the grace and forgiveness You freely offer.
