April 6 – Love and Sparrows

Psalm 122; Esther 9:1-5 18-23; Luke 12:4-12

I have become a bird watcher. Ok, more of a bird photographer than a bird watcher. I am still amazed at the variety of birds that God has created. I am just as amazed at those bird watchers who can look at a bird from ten miles away and tell me what kind of bird it is. There is one kind of bird that I know right away though: a sparrow. I have never had much appreciation for sparrows. They seem like pests and they are everywhere.

They were around in the days of Jesus too. They were not considered valuable back then either. “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.” (Luke 12:6) Yep, sparrows were seen as birds without much value and God loves and looks over each one of them. He doesn’t forget any of them. I don’t know if God gives each sparrow a name, but He could call each sparrow by name and never get it wrong. I think my daughter thought her name was “TimothyJosephElizabeth” at times.

The lesson of Jesus is very clear, though. If sparrows, which are so worthless in the minds of men, are remembered by God, how can we imagine any human being as worthless? God even knows the hairs on our heads. God loves us so much we really can’t comprehend it. There is nothing that I can compare in my life to the love God has for me. I love my wife and I love my children – but the depth of love that I have for them is like nothing compared to the depth of God’s love for me.

Because God loves me so much, I can’t look down on any other human being, since each one loved by God. Some reject that love, God keeps loving them. Some abuse that love or misinterpret it. God keeps loving them. His love for us is the basis of His forgiveness. Whether you talk about the most committed atheist or the most committed religious person whose religious views are contrary to God, we can never forget that God loves them also and wants to bring them into His family. Look for an unlovable person today and be the love of God in their life.

Lord, I am amazed at how much You love me. You didn’t just love me to let me sit back and relax in the knowledge of Your love, though. You have called me to love others and to show those people Your love. Give me the grace and strength to love even the “sparrows” among the people I meet.
