April 1 – Can You Handle the Truth?

Psalm 150; 1 Samuel 17:19-32; Acts 5:17-26

In a scene from “A Few Good Men” made famous by YouTube and internet memes, a witness responds to the lawyer’s questioning by yelling out “You can’t handle the truth.” Truth is a double edged sword that can be dangerous for people in power. Whether true or not, many people believe that those in power do all they can to hide the truth from the general public to maintain their power.

The apostles dealt with issues like that after the Resurrection. Imagine the revolution that might occur if people actually believed that someone had come back from the dead! So, the religious leaders, not wanting the truth to get out, sought to suppress the preaching of the apostles. Once they were arrested, and getting ready for a hearing the next day. “But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. ‘Go, stand in the temple courts,’ he said, ‘and tell the people all about this new life.’” (Acts 5:19-20)

The religious leaders went to the jail that next day, and the apostles weren’t there. They were mystified until they got the news that the apostles were back in the Temple Courts preaching the good news of Jesus. They went quickly and arrested them again. Imagine what that truth could do. The religious leaders were the ones who had sought the crucifixion of Jesus. The religious leaders had stirred the people up against Jesus. If the truth got out that God had actually resurrected Jesus, they would be thrown out of power.

Even today, in a society where the resurrection is seen as just an event that may have happened long ago instead of the earth shattering event that it is, people try to suppress the truth. In some areas of the world, professing Christ will lead to persecution often ending in death. In the United States, people let you believe what you want just so long as you don’t go acting on those beliefs or letting it affect your life and how you deal with people. The Resurrection is an earth shattering, life changing event – and yet we have reduced it to something nice to read about. Today, speak the truth of the Resurrection to Power: the power in your life, the power in your work, the power in society. Death is conquered! Jesus is Risen! God’s grace is available to all people! Hallelujah!

Lord God, help us to live the exciting truth of the Resurrection each and every day. Let us share the revolutionary truth of Your grace to a world that can’t handle the truth. Let Your spirit prepare hearts and minds of those we see so that they can let Your truth and Your grace change their lives.
