1 Timothy 2; Isaiah 34-35; Psalm 119:65-96
I just can’t believe what’s happening in Washington, DC! The President is way off base; Congress is creating gridlock; and the Supreme Court seems to be blind to the Constitution! What a terrible government we have. When I look at the corruption, the bad decisions, and all the other problems I throw up my hands in despair and cry out, “What’s a follower of Christ to do in this situation?”
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone– for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2) Oh. That’s not what I wanted to hear. I was thinking “call fire down from the sky,” or “send fire and brimstone” to the capitol. But pray? For these leaders? Seriously? Did God know how bad our leaders would be when He had Paul write this?
Paul wrote this when Nero was emperor. Nero took delight in finding ways to persecute and kill Christians. Local leaders were doing most of the persecution in Paul’s time, but eventually Nero took the lead. It was Nero that ordered Paul’s execution. Paul’s words to the church in those times were to pray for the governmental leaders. That’s a very sobering thought. In fact, no matter what I think of our current governmental leaders, they already look better in comparison.
I deliberately avoid making specific political statements on this blog. When you look at our government as I write this we have the President from one party and the Congress has majorities from the other party. It’s easy to find ways to hate one or the other. That is not the call of Christians, though. We are to pray for our leaders. As we prepare to elect a new President and Congress we need to pray for those who are running. Sometimes we may pray through clenched teeth, but we are to pray for those in authority.
Lord God, we as a country are blessed beyond measure. So I pray for our President, President Obama. I pray for our Congress. I pray for the Supreme Court. Give them Your wisdom and guidance. Help them as they govern to make good decisions that will benefit all people. Bless, strengthen, and protect them. I pray for our upcoming election and ask that we the people make good choices as we vote at each level of government. We pray that you would truly bless America with leaders who seek Your wisdom.
