Revelation 6; Nehemiah 8:13-9:37; Psalm 101
We live in a beautiful world. There are an amazing variety of places, peoples and animals. You can be high in the mountains and drive town to the beach within hours. You can live in the driest land where it never rains and drive to the wettest land where it never stops raining – or so it seems. The variety of plants and animals is breathtaking and even today, after years of exploration, we are still finding new species of plants and animals. Well, new to us. And dare I talk about what we will find when we finally begin to explore the ocean?
It is a world that we are called to take care of because it was created by God. “You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.” (Nehemiah 9:6) As followers of Christ, we are called to be good stewards of this world that God created and has given to us to enjoy.
It is important to realize that the foundation for our environmentalism, if I may use that word, is our belief that God has created this world. There have been some in the past who have been accused of believing that we could abuse this world and do whatever we wanted with it because it was given to us to enjoy. If you as a Christian believe that, please explain that in light of God’s call to be a steward of all that He has given to us. Jesus talked a lot about stewardship in His parables – stewardship of what the master had given to his servants.
There are others today working to protect our environment. They have good intentions but they don’t have the foundation of believing that this world is God’s creation to support them. As we agree with them on solutions to the problems of pollution and caring for our environment, we need to show them that the foundation of all we do to protect our world is that God has created this world and we are called to watch over it.
What a beautiful world You have created, O God! Help me to be a good steward of Your creation. Help me to show and teach others of Your magnificent work in creating this world.
