Matthew 17; Numbers 3-4; Ecclesiastes 3:16-4:16
One of the exceptional things about the United States is the belief from the beginning that rights come from God and that government’s job is to protect God given rights. In recent years there has been a trend among people here to believe that rights are granted by government and therefore can be extended or taken away by the government. When that happens, when there are no objective standards for what is right, and what is wrong, government becomes a capricious master. Solomon, even though he was the king, saw wickedness that ensued because people no longer followed God – perhaps because he didn’t have the heart for God that his father David had. “I saw something else under the sun: in the place of justice, there was wickedness; and in the place of what was right, there was wickedness again!” (Ecclesiastes 3:16) As followers of Christ we must always remember that the rights we have come from God. We must protect the rights God has given to all people. It may mean supporting rights that have become unpopular. It may mean opposing a majority that seeks to impose a wickedness on us as a right. We must always speak up for that which is right. May God give us the strength to support the rights He has granted us.
Lord, I am overwhelmed by wickedness in the world today. You have created this world and have given us rights and privileges. I see so many that would make that which is evil in Your sight become a right. I pray that righteousness might prevail, first in my life and then in our country. Change my heart and the hearts of others to make that happen.
