Matthew 13:1-23; Leviticus 17-18; Proverbs 28
“But mom! Everyone else is doing it!” And if your mom was like my mom, she probably said something like, “And if everyone else was jumping off a cliff, would you do it too?” It’s amazing how quickly we want to follow what everyone else is doing. We talk a lot about our individual freedoms, but we sure engage in society’s groupthink and follow her practices. God has a word about that. “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: I am the LORD your God. You must not do things like they are done in the land of Egypt, where you used to live. And you must not do things like they are done in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. You must not follow the practices of those places.” (Leviticus 18:2-3) As the Israelites prepared to enter Canaan, God reminded them that He had ways of doing things; He had standards that He expected His people to follow. While we as Christians do live under grace instead of under law, God still has expectations for our lives. The prayer of “But God! Everyone else is doing it!” just doesn’t make it with Him. Our freedom does not include blessings on rebellion against Him. In fact, if our relationship to God doesn’t mold us to be like Jesus, do we really have a relationship with Him or is it just a “marriage” of convenience? Let God work in you and mold your life as you become the person He is calling you to be.
Dear God, don’t let me be conformed to the thoughts and attitudes of society. Instead, let me be conformed to Your desires and reflect the image of Jesus Christ in all I say, think and do.
