January 5 – Forgiven Much?

Luke 7:18-50; Genesis 11; Psalm 5

After a while, we begin to get this “Christian” thing down. At least I think I do. To be honest, there are times when I drift from thankfulness about my relationship with God to thinking, at least subconsciously, that God is lucky to have me around as a follower. Jesus spoke to this attitude. “This is why I tell you that her many sins have been forgiven; so she has shown great love. The one who is forgiven little loves little.” (Luke 7:47) Jesus was speaking to a Pharisee who had invited Jesus to eat with him. The Pharisee wondered how Jesus would let a woman of ill repute wash His feet with her hair and her tears. Jesus reminded the Pharisee that he hadn’t fulfilled basic acts of a host, such as washing his feet, and yet this woman was doing all of those things he should have done. When our lives change and we get into the swing of living according to God’s principles, it’s easy to forget the journey and how much we’ve been forgiven. I need these reminders to get a humility check and be grateful for my forgiveness.

Lord, let me show my love and gratefulness for the forgiveness You have given me. Remind me that I am who I am today because of Your grace and forgiveness and keep my love for you burning.
