December 30 – The Mission

I realized that I hadn’t posted this yesterday. We began the day with internet problems and then had another interruption in the normal day. Picture at the bottom of the page.

Luke 4:31-44; Ezekiel 46-47; Isaiah 65

Actors often have a problem once they land certain types of roles. They often are so related to that type of role that no one can see them in any other kind of role. They are type cast and when they try other roles to break out of that type, their acting isn’t accepted. Jesus ran into a similar problem in His ministry. When He began healing people, they began to see Him as a Healer, but didn’t see Him for the main purpose for which He came. They wanted to keep Him boxed in as a Healer without recognizing that He came to preach the Kingdom of God. “Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; but He said to them, ‘I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.’” (Luke 4:42-43) We do that same thing today as well. We back God into a corner (in our own minds) and decide what He should do and shouldn’t do. If God doesn’t meet our expectations, well, He must not be much of a God, then. While God brings healing, that is not His primary purpose. God’s primary purpose is not to bring “health and wealth.” It’s not to care for the poor. It’s not to forgive sins so that we can live however we want. God’s purpose is to restore relationships with his people. He is bringing the kingdom of God into the lives of each person He encounters. We can’t seek God for what we want from Him; we must seek God for what He wants for us. Jesus reminded us of that attitude when praying in the Garden of Gethsemane: “nevertheless, not My will, but Thine be done.”

Lord, I have such a narrow view of Your power that I think I know exactly what You want. Remind me to seek You each day. Remind me that You are not able to be contained in my thoughts or in any physical house. Lord, flow through all the defenses I set up against You and restore our relationship each day.
