August 24 – Why Settle?

John 6:1-21; 1 Chronicles 22:2-23:32; Zechariah 9

The expectation the Jews had for the Messiah was that He would be a great warrior riding on a white horse drawing all the Jews to Himself and leading them to a great military victory over Rome. There were other indicators throughout Scripture that the Messiah might have a different appearance. One was the picture in Zechariah. “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9) Of all the prophecies Jesus fulfilled, this was the only one He did deliberately. This is not the great warrior king riding in on a mighty war steed, this is the humble king entering the city to be welcomed by His people. This is the King, bringing salvation to His people. Perhaps all of Jerusalem went wild when Jesus entered on the donkey because they expected Him to enter the city, accept His title and then become the warrior King. They didn’t expect His only aggression to be towards those who had turned the Temple into a religious Wal-Mart. Perhaps Jesus deliberately fulfilled this prophecy to change the perception that the Messiah would be a warrior King. He came not to bring deliverance from Rome to a small group of people; He came to bring deliverance from sin to all people. He came to restore relationships between God and man. Just as Jesus brought so much more to the Jews than they expected, so today Jesus not only restores our relationship with God He brings blessings that are far more than we deserve. Those of us who are followers of Christ sometimes look back at the Jews of Jesus’ day and wonder how they missed out on so much. I wonder if there are angels in heaven who look at us and think the same thing when we settle for such a small portion of the blessings that God has for us.

Oh God, You have prepared so much for us and we settle for so little. You offer us the joy of a restored relationship with You and we settle for fire insurance. You offer joy and a richness of life that is beyond measure and we settle for material blessings. Help me to understand all the depths of living in a restored relationship with You and then share that with others.
