May 22 – Heed the Call

Acts 27:13-44; 1 Samuel 3; Psalm 51

Paul had warned them not to depart, but, impatient men that they were, they set sail at the wrong time of year. Now, they were fighting for their lives as the ship was being tossed and torn. The cargo was thrown overboard. The men didn’t eat in part because there wasn’t time. Then God spoke and Paul relayed the message. He began by telling them “I told you so.” Then came the message of hope:  “For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.” (Acts 27:23-25) Paul knew that God had a plan for him. Because God had that plan for him, it affected the destiny of each of the men aboard that ship. Because Paul’s credibility had been established with the reminder of his warning, the centurion followed Paul’s advice to the letter. Every life on that ship was saved. I don’t know if each man came to faith in Christ, but they all had ample opportunity to see Paul’s faith in action and commit their lives to following Christ. God has a plan for each of our lives. It may not be as dramatic as appearing before Caesar. It may be more so. It may be that our lives are spared or it may be that God has called us to die as martyrs. We must do two things: we must recognize that God’s call on our life affects all those around us and we must be faithful to His call. If we are faithful to God’s call it gives those around us the opportunity to come to Christ. In this one instance, Paul affected 276 people. We never know exactly how many we may influence – but God’s call has a purpose and our obedience will give others that model of faithfulness and joy in the Lord that will draw some to Him.

Dear Lord, it’s so easy to get caught up in circumstances and forget Your call on our lives. Like Peter walking on the water, we look at the danger and forget about Your protection. Give us the faith of Paul to trust You no matter what the circumstances may be. Let our obedience draw others to You.
