May 6 – Turning the World Right Side Up

Acts 17:1-15; Judges 6; Job 36

The message of Jesus Christ is attractive and as Paul and Silas proclaimed Jesus to the Jews along the river in Thessalonica, Jews and Gentiles alike turned to Jesus. There is a problem whenever people start turning to Christ. The power shifts. The Jewish leaders of the city didn’t like this idea that they might lose power. They gathered a mob and started a riot. Not finding Paul and Silas, they took another tack: “But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, ‘These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.’” (Acts 17:6) What an amazing description of Christians – they turn the world upside down. I guess the truth is that we really turn the world God’s way – which is right side up. Many of our teachings are so antithetical to our culture that they seem completely upside down. Lose your life in order to find it. Give up your wealth to obtain riches in heaven. Let your relationship with Christ affect all parts of your daily life – don’t just engage in perfunctory worship and keep living however you want. That message was salt to a decaying culture and light to its darkness in Paul’s time. Unfortunately we don’t turn the world right side up anymore. According to today’s teachings while the world seeks wealth, Jesus is the way to get it even better. Don’t “be so heavenly minded that you’re no earthly good.” Look out for number one. It’s time to turn the world upside down again. There’s no magic key to do that, but it begins with being so focused on Jesus that we avoid distractions. It happens when our hearts are so intent on heaven that we seek to live its principles here on earth. It happens when we remember that people and their relationship with Christ are more important than any kind of wealth accumulation we might engage in. Turning the world right side up begins with each one of us every day.

Lord, we live in a world that is so upside down that most people don’t even realize it. Give me the strength to fight against the tide. Help me to turn my world right side up as I focus on You. Let my example and my words inspire others to follow You and turn their worlds right side up as well.
