October 1 – Greatness and Glory

Revelation 1; Nehemiah 1-2; Psalm 96

It’s easy to get fixated on national and international problems. What is this dictator doing here? How will we respond to this disaster there? Will our country survive this latest crisis? These problems all have one root cause: as a nation and as a world we have chosen not to follow God’s plan. We have gone our own way without inviting God into the process. As a result we live from crisis to crisis and the world keeps teetering on the brink of destruction.

The Psalmist reminds us how to begin the road back to a world that makes sense:  “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” God has done some amazing things in our world. The Israelites could point to the miracles God performed to bring them to where they were. We’ve lost our sense of the miraculous. We don’t recognize God’s hand in the process. We need to recall His glory and tell others about that glory. We need to recognize and tell what amazing things God has done. In a world that focuses on natural explanations for everything we need to recognize God’s presence and God’s actions.

How easy it is for me to let the problems of the world dictate how I feel and what I say and do. Before I can declare God’s glory among the nations, I have to experience His glory in my life. I can do that by continuing to keep my focus on the greatness of God. Before I can declare God’s marvelous works among the people I need to know how He has worked. I need to keep my spiritual eyes open to recognize God’s hand in the events of my life and in the world. Today, Lord, let me see Your hand at work in the events of this world; let me experience Your glory in all parts of my life. Then let me proclaim your greatness and glory among all those I meet.
